TelePrompTers

TelePrompTers—off-camera devices that allow a presenter to see a magnified script—are commonly used today for important speeches that are beamed to distant locations. The advantage of using modern TelePrompTers is that they are situated so you can read from them and still look as if you are peering directly into the camera lens. You give the impression of knowing what you are talking about, sound more fluent, and can speak at great length without consulting notes.

The newest models are voice activated and stay ahead of the speaker. Some models even display the text of the speech directly on the camera lens itself. Whatever type you have available, TelePrompTers do take some getting used to.

Normally TelePrompTers display four words per line and include three lines ahead of where you are speaking. The lines move at the speed of your voice. If you slow down, so will the TelePrompTer. If you rush ahead, fearful that the words will pass you by, the TelePrompTer will just speed up to accommodate you.

If you will be using a TelePrompTer, be sure to practice with one until you feel comfortable with the technology. Fortunately, the learning curve is very quick.

However, unless you practice first, your inexperience will show when you are speaking. Your eyes will move from left to right as if you are watching a tennis match. Get your feet wet first—without an audience!
